me, my stringed instrument

my affair with the guitar began on the auspicious day-8th of november 2004..a monday.
i threw a tantrum(yeah i do ppl! and i know u all do too when required) a week prior to that day...pestering my mum to let me learn the guitar.as it is mum knew i swear by western music most of the time.ya so she asked me,for a stringed instrument you could do with a violin.after all we know violin is worshipped in western classicals.i had to admit to a sheepish feeling ..she has an uncanny ability to speak the truth my lady..but wait hey mum, dont u know?its the rock music, the head-banging..i fancy(happily reminds me of when i fight with ma sis and bro)maybe it reminded her too!
anyway she had to give in as she knew i would be sulking the whole month if she didn't give in.so there i was on my birthday speaking to this heavily moustached tamil speaking christian sir who looked every inch like a carnatic vocalist rather than a sunglassed guitar god! the first of my expectations crushed miserably. he asked me to stretch out my palm and gazed at it for longer than any astrologer i ever showed it to, to see if my fingers had the strength to twang those strings.personally i dont think he was impressed.
he looked me up and down ( i was wearing this hanging-tongue-eager-puppy look) and maybe his initial hesitation gave way,so he said yeah ok so u can start ur lessons on monday. i was like (up on cloud number 9-bryan adams).. the moment i reached home like a victorious warrior my mum knew disaster was brewing..ok so he agreed to teach u? ya mum o'course!
i spent more time on visualizing the class than i should have on brushing up the guitar info i had. left the house merrily and landed in class.woho..i peered into a teeny weeny dingy room which looked like a former storeroom..again,my immature expectations of a concert arena kinda classroom bit the dust. i entered, wished sir, settled down pompously..! i was raring to have a go at the guitar.sir placed an old battered hand-me-down kinda guitar on my lap and i gingerly placed a finger on it. yeah he said its old but good..ok point taken. so i get a plectrum to pluck the strings..i'm supposed to pick the 1st string 2 times then the 2nd string 2 times..after 1hour of the same exercise he said 'ok thats all for today'. what?i felt like a fool. well of course he wont teach u a song on the first attempt bozo! i reached home ooh-ing and aah-ing over my first class.
hmm ... i went back on wednesday eager for something well 'nice,interesting...' and he says come girl, now we do the 1st,2nd 3rd and 4th strings 2day..pick them consecutively 2times each...well if thats what i gotta do,i gotta do it! so i pick these wonderful strings 2 times each for 1 hour ..all the while watching the senior guitarists showing off in front of the new girl .hey this guy is showing off a new rhyme he learnt?!! and its time to go. i come back and back again 4 one month more learning to pick whichever string i wanted, switching finger positions as fast as i could... yawn now i know u guys are also getting bugged..i seriously was feeling, er, grrr..
now dont say 'huh??!!!!'
but a tiny irritating inside occupant...well we all know who..kept saying patience slow steady etc etc for 'n' no. of times..
coz sir was just purrrrrfect.oh gosh,he can play scorpions or even november rain with his eyes closed!i worship his talent. besides, the classes grow interesting after the basics.and i was always the one asked to sing when he played.heavenly sessions those were...have u heard sounds of silence??
i got my own brand new guitar 2 months later and explored every inch of it greedily.somewhere, cupid struck.i pamper it like a baby.
now i havent been going to classes for a while, but, umpteen sessions later,i can do some chordwork and play a few tunes.atleast,my neighbours dont shut their doors and windows when i practice.and sis actually said 'cool'.its like magic, sitting on the terrace floor at night, strumming softly.
whatsay?

i wished my dad wud buy me a guitar
i wanted to be a rock star

my dad in his wisdom dint even buy a radio

we goans love music and foot ball
and it takes precendence over studies

dad said: musicians start of playing for weddings and graduate to hotels and then to rock concerts

most dont succeed
they then end up playing for funerals

'nearer my God to thee'
same happens to foot ballers

Guitars ARE fun. And women with guitars are HOT! (God, I sound like Paris Hilton)

Most tutors in Bangalore don't teach it well enough. Its easy to lose interest in learning, but don't give up on it, girl. Good luck!
