i am a rock addict??

mmm...
cant tell you how much i missed blogging here. anyway i solemnly promise with all my heart to write sincerely..bah! enough of crap. well feels good to get back to business.
yesterday i was at the computer table and whoa! listened to some head banging music(?!!) courtesy metallica, iron maiden, limp bizkit...this thought just creeped into my brain refusing to let go. when we say 'i listen' to rock music, how many of us actually make out the lyrics clearly between the loud banging of the guitar and drums?? do we go in for the lyrical quality of rock?? or is rock music an excuse for us to blatantly behave like the ancestors of the modern man??

i bugged my friends as well as total strangers, asking them if they understood any of those lines..barring some exceptions, nobody knew anything about the song/artist except the first catchy line to scream out loud!!

i am a rock addict too and i was shocked when, at a radio show, ppl dedicated hate songs to their most loved ones without even realising it!! i wanted to scream 'people, grow up!'

they form this separate category-they are seen at all rock concerts, coz being spotted at a rock show is the latest rage. they dont know the basic message/meaning of the song, dont even know the exact genre of rock and frown at an acoustic guitar bcoz according to them, only an electric guitar means music!

bah! i've had enough of artificial 'fans' of rock.

what say guys?

hey,
As far as Metallica goes well he puts in a lot of meaningful music,gr8 play with the guitar and sings gr8 too.Try listening to "Turn the Page" when u r really frustrated, angry whatever. It rocks big time. But do u enjoy the heavy metal stuff to in which u can barely can hear the words and even if u do wonder if it makes any sense.Heard some part of ID rock held at Andheri on TV and thought it was utter crap. The only doubt i had was....Which part of that was music;)

me, u got me wrong. i too love metallica. i was talking about ppl who pretend they love rock music for the mere heck of it.
i don't connect with a song until i know what it means or it sounds like there is some music in it.
there is rock music and there is a cheap imitation of rock music.

as for u kalpesh, good that u got hooked on . its a great genre.
and for ur info, i am from bangalore. u thought i am a mumbaite from my posts?? hmm now u set me thinkng.is it because i know hindi??well arent ppl from other cities supposed to speak the language? :)

and yeah i am considering the name u suggested..it sounds like me!!

thanx both u guys for dropping in.

Well a lot of people do a lot of things, just coz its a fad. Or because of peer pressure. Either way, they will grow out of it. If not, well, they'll never know the difference anyway :)

Well..firstly, thanx for those nice words..! And yes, comin to the rock part..it is really irritating when junta listen to it for d heck of it..Even i'm kindaa rock fan..But only a few songs send me up..take for eg metallica..For whom the bell tolls is one of the songs where I kindaa momentarily black out during the guitaring..and take dance of death from maiden..or high hopes, floyd..or comfortably numb..its jus so damn good..can keep listening to it again and again..and the lyrics..yes..even I do not hold on to 'em in many..but cmon..you don;t listen to a rock song for lyrics..you do so for music..Anyways..how did u reach my blog..u in bang..so do u know me by any chance..? or do i know you..?

Ya, rightly said. I've too had my share of that other species of pseudo-rock lovers. I've been rocking around (read listening rock) since around three and half years (time since I entered college) and guess what? I can make out most of the lyrics behind that blaring drum roll or the screechy metal strings.

The only thing that comes to my mind when I come across the people you mentioned is "public attention". May be they're the kind of people, of course without any genuine talent, who are desperately trying to catch attention and to make a point that they exist.

Anyways, if you're beginning to enjoy rock, I've got one suggestion. Listen to the group EVANESCENCE. The lead voaclist is a girl (Amy Lee). She's got awesome intensity in her voice. My favourites are: Bring me to life, Farther away, Tourniquet, et al. Happy rocking..!

hmmm....right actually...

barring a few exceptions, most rock songs seem to be an expression of rage, anger and otehr illogical feelings of humans.

I really can't understand why youth, at most colleges including mine, prefers rock compared to the much more soulful Hindi/English songs.

rock, if u ask me, is all about passion...take metallica, for instance......the lyrics may be intensely personal for the artists, but the passion they put into their music is amazing....take nothing else matters...who knows, hetfield might have been talking abt some relationship of his?anyway, nice blog...

Having watched a Metallica live concert about 9 years back, I know what they are really capable of. I still have problems adapting to contemporary and this millennieum's rocksters. I would stand by the 70s groups. Well, personal opinion, you don't have to concur. Anyway, I followed your link from Manasi's. And read your blog 2 and can empathise with too much of holidays at a stretch. Anyway, never too late in the day to wish "Welcome to the Blog World".

To all the 'real' rock fans out there : there are some awesome bands like iron maiden, dream theater, Metallica, Rush to name a few....what matters in these songs is the passion and talent that comes out...
PS: as for maiden fans check out their earlier albums like seventh son of a seventh son and 'somewhere in time'...awesome...!!

nice post & well written..I agree there are these fake rock addicts at the moshpits but u gotto give them a chance to develop & mature their taste with time.Even I(hope am not a fake)didnt get the lyrics from the day i started listening.it takes time...also believe me, if these fakes leave, rock the bands will have hardly any real audience,at least in the Indian rock scene.

About genre, I dont think its necessary to differentiate & be an expert of music...to identify the difference b/e industrial, gothic & progressive.many listen to music & appreciate lyrics because it appeals to their senses.thats it !!

abt lyrics..it is an essential part of the whole thing.yest'day a guy told me he liked fade to black..i asked him about death & suicide & he had no idea abt the lyrics. But that apart,at times I seriously feel it is very difficult to appreciate the lyrics in the same light as intended.der r different reasons they pen down lyrics which we can never gauge & alltogether have a different picture to us.eg. Mother by floyd, I look at it as something & every1 I asked differs on that.I checked it up even waters had a diff funda behind it.

Ah your guitar teacher would have to be in love ..after all we are talking abt 'john petrucci' here !!!
You can also check out Joe satriani and Steve vai for some awesome guitaring...
and dream theater has released a couple of albums without vocals under the band name liquid tension experiment.
And try rush ..u mite be put off by the vocals initially but after sometime u start admiring them ...their drummer has to be one of the best in the world..
Too much fundas i think :-)...
